Production Method | Design and Planning: Initially, an artist or designer sketches the floral design, deciding on patterns, colors, and the overall aesthetic. Material Preparation: The holder itself is likely made from ceramic or a similar material. The base clay is wedged to remove air bubbles and then shaped. Shaping: The clay is hand-thrown or molded into the desired shape of a paper towel holder, with attention to the dimensions to ensure a standard roll of paper towel fits comfortably. Drying: After shaping, the holder must be left to air dry to a leather-hard state where it can be handled without deforming but is still malleable for further work. Bisque Firing: Once it’s dry, the holder is bisque-fired in a kiln, which is a preliminary firing to harden the clay and prepare it for glazing. Hand-Painting: After the bisque firing, the artist hand-paints the floral design onto the holder. Special ceramic paints or underglazes are used for this process. Glazing: A clear or tinted glaze may be applied over the painted design to both protect the paint and give the holder a glossy finish. Glaze also seals the ceramic, making it non-porous and easier to clean. Final Firing: The painted and glazed holder undergoes a final firing at a high temperature to finish the ceramic process. The glaze becomes glass-like, and the holder becomes durable and functional. Quality Check: After cooling, it undergoes a quality check to ensure there are no cracks or imperfections. Assembly: If the holder has any separate pieces, such as a base or an arm, these may be attached after the final firing with a strong adhesive or joined before the first firing if made of the same clay body. |
